Glad you surfaced; I read your original piece when you discovered how The Guardian was being sold out to oil interests, and the Turtle. When you published your own investigation about the very questionable transaction, you were essentially summarily fired. Not a surprise, but a high price to pay for integrity. I'm glad to see you're recovered your equilibrium.

Thank you for this. There's no way we can understand how a fascist dictator takes control unless we look at Germany in the late 30's. Those who say it can't happen here need to wake up. It not only is happening, it has happened. Trump has cemented his power. The concrete is just curing. Soon it will be as strong as Hoover Dam.

There have only been a few potholes in Trump's road to absolute control. There have been some court cases he lost, but the worst so far has been Signalgate. It looks like this will just end up as a somewhat larger pothole and his juggernaut will be past it before long. To keep with the Nazi analogy, Turmp's blitzkrieg is well underway. https://halbrown.substack.com

I continue to be grateful for your tenacity, humanity, and courage, Carole, and your well-placed outrage. Your carefully researched writing makes me feel less like the crazy old woman muttering to herself over in the corner (how some of my so-called friends sometimes make me feel...) We here in Canada are increasingly alarmed by the actions and words of the Trump regime (I refuse to call it an administration) and we are also angry -- AND we clearly see the fealty to Putin. There is growing resistance here, in the US and in Britain and the EU, but I worry it will not be enough to prevent a catastrophic war. That said, we must never ever give up the fight against fascism, even if it costs us our lives. Please keep doing what you are doing -- the inspiration you provide is very much needed. Thank you.

A very warm welcome back to Substack, Carole. It wasn't quite the same here without you.

What I find most alarming is that the number of people who should be standing with you on all of this who have chosen to dismiss or ignore your work. I can't say why, but it's precisely this kind of under reaction which emboldens and empowers the current US administration, the Kremlin, and other copycat autocracies and despots to push further. If these people don't get their game together right soon, it'll be too late and they'll be wondering and possibly even writing 'how did it come to this?' The answer will be, because you did fuck all to stop it. You let it happen.

Quite frankly, journalists who achieve the privileged position of engaging in fact-based journalism of credibility and who have the ears and eyes of many are the only individuals with the power to stop the all-consuming beast of fascism, or at least slow it down.

You have played your part and then some, Carole. You are one of very few who get to say you tried your best and did everything you could. Of course, we all thank you for that, and continue to do so.

Ms. Cadwalladr, your bravery and courage are rare. Sharing your gift of long-term vision from Cambridge Analytica-to Brexit-to the US disaster-to the war in Ukraine-to Observer sell-out-to the understanding that women are the guinea pigs, it's the holistic approach journalism must take. It's all related, and intertwined which is why our current 'wack-a-mole' approach to the issues of the day leave people despondent and turned out. If we stand up for one thing, let it be all things. No more silos of identity politics. Thank you for your work!

I've been an admirer of your work beginning when you broke onto the world scene with your revelations about Cambridge Analytica . And I read your surviving the Broligarchy about the Guardian last fall. It was depressing to see such a storied institution so compromised by its own board. I knew you would suffer for revealing that story. It is important that you not be silenced. Your sharp investigative skills, your ability to counter aggressive misinformation with facts and corroboration, and your tenacity make you a force for truth. It is hard to maintain focus when hyper right wing money and interests use their power to retaliate. Welcome back to the fray, Carole. You are needed.........

The use of an El Salvadorian prison is not an attack on the “republic”; rather it shines a spotlight on what the US has always been. Prison conditions have always been awful. Decades before Guantanamo the prison farms of the southern states cared not a jot for black men’s human rights; southern state governors relished appearing cruel. Northern states had appalling prisons and the length of sentences beggar belief.

What Trump is doing is bringing into the daylight how US presidents have always acted. No-one can be genuinely surprised.

Lawrence Tribe is wonderful; Timothy Snyder’s pithy little book, “On Tyranny” is a must read!

Professor Snyder and his family are moving to Canada, as is Jason Stanley, (an equally accomplished fascist scholar) and his family.

Nothing says dictatorship louder than leading voices fleeing the country.

I’m commenting only on his written work. I won’t engage in name calling and put downs about others I don’t know; I judge a person on the quality of their work. You could head over to Meta or to X if you just want to keep up your line of commentary.

No idea what point you are making.

I've been a fan of Snyder and Stanley for many years.

My point is that we're so far down the path of fascism that the leading scholars on authoritarian rule are fleeing the country.
