It’s been said many times, but if Trump really was a Russian plant, what would he be doing differently? His regime is no different to Putin’s Russia or any other autocracy. Complete with the corruption, subservient oligarchs, attacks on independent media and civil society, creation of a violent armed militia, and the rest. Most of all the merging of the legislature and judiciary with the executive.
U.K. and Europe are on their own. Outlets like X need to be treated like Russia Today. Propaganda outlets, undermining democracy and creating division. Similarly their allies in the U.K.

MailOnline and Facebook comments are saturated with “We need Trump here!” and “If only Trump would invade us and fix this!”. I hope they are foreign trolls not actual Brits but in these weird times who knows?
Around 12,000 people were arrested in the UK in 2025 for “offensive” social media posts. A man was also arrested for burning a Koran to protest Islam. He was attacked by a Muslim with a knife. That didn’t make a difference to the arrest. Germany has also arrested people for naughty social media posts. With such blatant suppression of free speech in Europe, maybe Europeans need to focus less on Trump and more on restoring their on basic civil liberties. And if you don’t think people have the right to strongly criticize immigration and Islam, you don’t believe in free speech.

Fascism is the better word choice for Washington's local, national and international actions. Extrajudicial killings on the sea and ground must be documented and prosecuted. We are in this together. I recently watched "Judgement at Nuremberg" which I hadn't seen for years. It was a timely reminder of the dangers of just doing nothing and of time when America showed some decency. God help us if we look away now!
??? I’m in Australia and our Government is censoring us and to be honest I’m sick and tired of people sticking to these narratives of left vs right. We are all being screwed over by Governments, so no Carole, I don’t agree with your piece and your perspective on things whatsoever.
We are all being screwed over by massive corporations actually, chief among them the tech giants who want the right to disseminate hate and propaganda but are outraged when anyone tries to monitor and provide context to that hate and propaganda. Some Governments are very much screwing people but at least in part because they have been captured by these corporations, whether tech nutcases in the US or those lobbying on behalf of dubious interests in the UK, including shady think tanks. Brilliant work Carole. The naysayers here are minimal but the more you cut through here as opposed to the mainstream, I'm sure, as I'm sure you know only too well, the more your opponents will try to knock you back. I'd love to contribute more to your work but as someone in your trade at a much less exalted level, now pretty much out of work myself, sadly I can't. Love reading your investigations and analysis and I hope those, and this Substack prosper greatly in 2026.
Which of the tech platforms haven't got free speech? Most rig their algorithms to present their own skewed view of the world, so I'm not really sure what point you're making. Money purchases power and gives itself the loudest voice.
There are genuine concerns about the shutting down of protest - legislation voted through by Johnson's Tories and not revoked, as you would expect, by a Labour government. Plans to remove the right to trial by jury also concern me. The treatment of those jailed for holding signs supporting Palestine Action, many of whom have been on hunger strike, has been scandalous. But we now have virulently anti-migrant channels such as GBNews, which, while supposedly monitored by Ofcom, muddy the waters of what is news or opinion, with little oversight like most of our terrestrial stations are bound by. So this is all part of a right-wing system, technically out of power but through a wide spread of mainstream newspapers, social media, think tanks and lobbyists, some with unknown or hidden forms of financing (mostly the American super-rich), is creating an atmosphere that is rabidly anti anything left of centre. Yes, we need freedom of speech, but does that give you the right to say anything, however horrific? Democracy has never been perfect and beyond their vote every five years, individuals don't really have much of a voice but attempts in America to override democracy, to do away with the checks and balances that restrict the power of would-be authoritarians must not be imported into the UK. Yet there is one man who has learnt at the Trump table and the danger of having him, with his contacts with US and Russian despots, should scare the bejesus out of all of us.
And just what the fuck do Nazis have to contribute to the public discourse? Poison, that is what. Wàaah, you won't let us poison your wells, come see the violence inherent in the system! Help help, you are being repressed!
